Dear Church Family and Friends,
This Sunday, we will begin our summer sermon series in the Psalms. This has been our custom for the past 7-8 summers! We will pick back up in Psalm 97 in book four of the Psalter.
This group of psalms that we will consider will be centered around the theme: The LORD Reigns! These psalms place a heavy emphasis on the sovereignty and majesty of the Lord God Almighty and our call to worship Him!
I wanted to share with you a few notes and ideas as we begin this series:
In the public reading of the Scripture, I plan to use the name "Yahweh" where you see the word "LORD" in your English Bibles. The name LORD in all capital letters is an English convention to show the covenant name of God in Hebrew, which is often transliterated into English as Yahweh. It is sometimes transliterated by the German equivalent, Jehovah. I will do this so that we can understand the personal and covenantal way that the different psalmists use the name of God. It gives it a more personal and even reverential touch.
I want to encourage you to use the Psalms to pray. We often struggle so much with what or how to pray. We especially struggle with how to pray in a way that brings reverence and honor to God. The Psalms are not only filled with worship, but they are filled with language to help us speak to God and pray to His holy name.
Remember the important place of the Psalms in the Christian life. I love the quote from the early church father Athanasius of Alexandria, who said, “...the Psalms have a unique place in the Bible because most of the Scripture speaks to us, while the Psalms speak for us." The late German theologian Ernst Wilhelm Hengstenberg echoes this thought when he wrote, "The Psalms are expressions of holy feeling, which can be understood by those only who have become alive to such feeling."
I'm looking forward to worshiping with you this Lord's Day! See you Sunday!
by His grace and to His praise,
