Dear Church Family and Friends, 

The Lord Jesus was gracious and kind to give His church two sacraments. These two sacraments are baptism and communion (or the Lord's Supper). The purpose of a sacrament is to communicate to us the benefits of redemption secured by Jesus Christ. Just like we would all agree that reading the Bible, prayer, and even preaching are essential elements to help us worship, so are the sacraments. 

This Sunday, we will have the opportunity to participate and celebrate both sacraments in the worship service. In order for us to rightly discern what it is that we are doing and why we are doing it, we will profess questions 92-96 of the Westminster Shorter Catechism. These catechisms are a wonderful teaching tool to help us rightly discern what the Bible's teaching is on these wonderful means of grace. I invite you to consider them as you prepare your hearts for worship this Sunday. 

Q. 92. What is a sacrament?
A. A sacrament is a holy ordinance instituted by Christ; wherein, by sensible signs, Christ, and the benefits of the new covenant, are represented, sealed, and applied to believers.

Q. 93. Which are the sacraments of the New Testament?
A. The sacraments of the New Testament are baptism and the Lord’s supper.

Q. 94. What is baptism?
A. Baptism is a sacrament, wherein the washing with water in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, doth signify and seal our ingrafting into Christ, and partaking of the benefits of the covenant of grace, and our engagement to be the Lord’s.

Q. 95. To whom is baptism to be administered?
A. Baptism is not to be administered to any that are out of the visible church, till they profess their faith in Christ, and obedience to him; but the infants of such as are members of the visible church are to be baptized.

Q. 96. What is the Lord’s supper?
A. The Lord’s supper is a sacrament, wherein, by giving and receiving bread and wine according to Christ’s appointment, his death is showed forth; and the worthy receivers are, not after a corporal and carnal manner, but by faith, made partakers of his body and blood, with all his benefits, to their spiritual nourishment and growth in grace.

Cornerstone Prayer Requests

Pray for church members caring for family - Susan Dupré, Emily Hinson, Kyle Mosier, Paul Poppe, Sarah Robins Powell, Kim Sweatt, Paul and Christina Wendorf.

Pray for healing - Suzi Bolton, Kathy Cassis, Dawn Chenault, Val Myers, Tim and Gayle Ricks, Libby Stanfield, Steve Sedlack, and Annette Sweatt. 

Pray for our homebound friends - Betty Baldwin and Suzi Bolton.

Pray for engaged couples that they will choose patience, forgiveness, and selfless love daily, making the Lord the center of their relationship (Col. 3:14, Ecc. 4:9, 12 ESV).

Pray for our expectant mothers - Morgan High (December), Hayley Honeywell (February), and the Poppe family (adoption). 

Pray for our Missional Partnerships - Brent and Selina Miller - Missionaries to Mexico with Mexico Medical Missions and Christ Presbyterian Church, Hampton Cove, AL (Rev. Michael Calvert).

Pray for our men’s ministry - that the men of Cornerstone would be clothed with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience (Col. 3:12 ESV).

College and Career Fellowship Lunch - This Sunday, August 30, at the Shirleys’ at 12:30 pm. 

Junior High SNF - This Sunday, August 30, at the Slatens' home from 6-8 pm. 

Women’s Fall Bible Study - Joshua by Jen Wilkin, begins Tuesday, September 1. Wednesday nights (6:15-7:15 pm), begins September 2.

Youth Group - Wednesday, September 2, from 6-8 pm in the Fellowship Hall.

Foundations - Begins Wednesday, September 9, with a fellowship meal at 5:30 pm in the Family Life Center, followed by discipleship opportunities for all ages from 6:15-7:15 pm. Nursery is provided. RSVP for dinner here!

Children (K-5th) - Catechism. Led by Mary Cooper and volunteers.

Youth (6th-12th Grade) - Ten Commandments. Led by Pastor Chris and volunteers.

Adults - God’s Big Picture, Tracing the Storyline of the Bible. Led by Pastor John and Pastor Brian.

Women - Joshua by Jen Wilkin.

Men’s Oktoberfest Fall Dinner - Men, join us on Sunday, September 20, for our annual Fall Men’s Dinner. We’ll have an authentic Oktoberfest dinner! Our theme is A Man's Call to Be Tough-Minded and Tender-Hearted. We’ll hear from Rick Stark, Associate Pastor at Decatur PCA, and enjoy a time of fellowship. All men, high school-aged and up, are welcome to join us; invite a friend! Register online today!

Summer 2027 Mission Trip with Sacred Road: If you are interested in going next summer, please contact the church office by Friday, September 4.

Luke5 Hike - Saturday, September 12, at Madison County Nature Trail, Green Mountain. Hike begins at 9 am; Sherpas arrive by 8:45 am.
