Newsletter April 3, 2026
Dear Church Family and Friends,
Today is Good Friday! Why do we call it "good"? ... How can something so awful, so tragic as a crucifixion be considered good? ... It is because the death of Jesus Christ on the cross is THE central event in the story of redemption. "For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son." (John 3:16). "God did not spare His own Son but gave Him up for us all." (Romans 8:32)
Tonight we will remember, reflect, and worship the LORD during our Good Friday Communion Service at 6:00 pm. Please prepare your heart for this important service. Also, please keep a few things in mind:
First, there will be a special offering for the Deacons' Benevolence Fund. Twice a year, a special offering is collected to fund benevolent activities in our congregation and in the community.
Second, at the service, we will depart in silence as we somberly reflect on the crucifixion.
In preparation for this service, let me invite you to meditate on the Gospel according to Isaiah:
Behold, my servant shall act wisely; he shall be high and lifted up, and shall be exalted. As many were astonished at you— his appearance was so marred, beyond human semblance, and his form beyond that of the children of mankind—so shall he sprinkle many nations. Kings shall shut their mouths because of him, for that which has not been told them they see, and that which they have not heard they understand.
Who has believed what he has heard from us? And to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed? For he grew up before him like a young plant, and like a root out of dry ground; he had no form or majesty that we should look at him, and no beauty that we should desire him.He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief; and as one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not. Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted.
But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed. ll we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned—every one—to his own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all. (Isaiah 52:13-53:6 ESV)
See you tonight! And for Resurrection Sunday! If you’ve not RSVP’d for Sunday, please do so here.
by His grace and to His praise,

Holy Week artwork
The concept for this year's Holy Week art centers on the spiritual, material, and fundamental nature of Jesus's death, burial, and resurrection--the three "things of most importance" of which Paul is reminding the Corinthians. Rather than take a more cerebral or complex approach, I wanted to distill the representation of these three events to simple subjects and form: an everyday still life that, in its meaning, is life-altering. Paul relayed these truths to the church through a personal letter. In the same way, the redemptive work of Christ is approachable and elemental to the Christian identity. In this image, the nails represent Christ's death, the cinnamon and jug reference the spices and oils used in preparation of his body for burial, and the folded and draped cloths remind us of his resurrection.
A big thanks to Sarah Robins Powell for our Holy Week artwork!
