Newsletter May 2, 2025

Dear Cornerstone Family,

One of the great blessings we have as elders is to meet with children who are ready to publicly profess their faith in Christ and be admitted by the Session to the Lord's Table. In preparation for this, we offer a communicant's class each year. The class is similar to the new members’ class for adults in some ways, although the kids prefer to eat stuffed-crust pizza while learning about the five membership vows!

During the class, we spend time talking about the Gospel, what it means to follow Christ and grow as a Christian, what it looks like to be part of the church, and we spend a lesson in the sanctuary talking about communion. The class is a partnership with parents, as a parent attends each session with their child. The kids work through a workbook called "Understanding the Faith: A Workbook for Communicants Classes" by Pastor Stephen Smallman at home during the class and after the class has ended.

Once they have completed the class and are ready, the child and a parent will meet with a couple of elders to be interviewed for membership. One thing that we discuss in class is that kids may sometimes take a little longer to be ready to meet with the elders as they work through things at home. To that end, we have a few communicants from last year's class who will be joining Sunday, along with some from this year's class. There will also be some others from this year's class that you might see standing up front later this year.

After the communicants are approved by the Session, they are presented before the congregation and will affirm the membership vows. If there are any who have not yet been baptized, we do the baptism at that time.

This Sunday we will welcome several new communing members! We are thankful for the privilege to come alongside their parents in ministry to these children. Members of Cornerstone commit at infant baptisms to "undertake the responsibility of assisting the parents in the Christian nurture of the child" and to pray for the child. This Sunday is a time for celebration as we give thanks to God for His work in the lives of these children and continue to uphold the commitment we made to assist parents and pray for these children.

Thank you, Cornerstone, for your ongoing ministry to these children and their families!

See you Sunday!

Pastor Brian
