Newsletter August 22, 2025

Dear Church Family and Friends,

It has been wonderful to get back into our study of The Sermon on the Mount. I have said this on many occasions, but this sermon is amazing in many ways. One of the chief ways we can be amazed is in the way that Jesus takes the time to instruct us on how to follow Him. The Sermon on the Mount is the marching instructions for a disciple of Jesus Christ. Do you want to know how to follow Jesus and live for Him? Then read, study, and meditate upon the words that He speaks in this most famous sermon.

This past week, we explored Jesus' teaching on fasting and how it wrapped up a series of three ways, three examples, of how we are to avoid hypocrisy in the Christian life. One of the things that I have been meditating on is how can I use fasting more often to be moved to pray specifically for areas in my life God has called me to be more intentional in prayer, but also, in what areas in my life do I need to consider a fast? ... I would invite you to do this as well.

The application that I asked us all to consider this past week was, “What in your life are you convicted has too much control over you, and perhaps you need to fast from it to seek God in prayer?” … Alcohol … social media … video games … exercise … excessively watching your financial portfolio … What is it for you?

But we are not called to fast from something for fasting’s sake. We need to consider replacing it with something profitable, like Bible study and prayer … or reading a good Christian book! We are to fast for the glory of God, not for ourselves!

This week, Jesus will take us more and more into the heart of what it means to follow Him as He challenges us to examine our hearts and ask, "What do I treasure?" Consider that before the Lord's Day. What is it that is most valuable to you? Matthew 6:19-24 will be our passage of study.

Also, join me in welcoming Brian Russ back this Sunday! This Sunday will officially end his sabbatical. We are looking forward to welcoming him back and enjoying his ministry among us.

See you Sunday!

by His grace and to His praise,

Pastor Wilson
