Dear Church Family and Friends,
Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
As we seek to grow together in our personal and corporate walk with the Lord, one of the most important disciplines we can cultivate is our prayer lives. Prayer is our direct line of communion with our Heavenly Father, a precious gift that is ours because of the mediatorial work of Christ.
At times, however, we all experience seasons where our prayers feel sluggish, repetitive, or difficult to simply get started. In those moments, leaning on the rich prayer books and liturgies of faithful Christians throughout church history can be a wonderful tool to stir our affections, ground our thoughts in Scripture, and re-orient our hearts toward God.
Below are my top five recommended prayer books that have been a deep source of spiritual encouragement to me, and I hope they will be a blessing to you as well:
The Valley of Vision – A classic collection of Puritan prayers and devotions that beautifully exposes the depth of our need and the richness of God's grace. I have been using the resource for over 20 years. It has also been a great blessing to help me lead in corporate prayer.
Daily Worship Liturgy Series– An excellent resource for structuring daily private and family devotions with gospel-centered liturgies. There are four of them. I am gearing up to use the Advent devotion after Thanksgiving. I'm currently enjoying the brand new one of the Psalms.
Matthew Henry’s Method for Prayer – A timeless guide on how to pray using the very language of Scripture itself. He is most known for his commentary on the whole Bible but this resource is just as excellent.
Diary of Private Prayer by John Baillie – A classic collection of morning and evening prayers that assist in daily self-examination and praise. While Bailie is from the old mainline PCUS, this is still a helpful resource.
Praying the Bible by Donald S. Whitney – A practical, transformative guide on how to pray through passages of Scripture, particularly the Psalms.
I encourage you to pick up one of these resources to help enrich your daily quiet time with the Lord.

Pray for healing - Suzi Bolton, Dawn Chenault, Tim and Gayle Ricks, Libby Stanfield, Steve Sedlack, and Annette Sweatt.

Pray for our children’s ministry - that the Lord would watch over our children's ministry, filling our children with wonder at his majesty and guiding them to grow in the knowledge of his love.

Senior High SNF - Tonight from 6-8 pm at the Summers’ home.
Foundations - Continues Wednesday, September 23, with a fellowship meal at 5:30 pm in the Family Life Center, followed by discipleship opportunities for all ages from 6:15-7:15 pm. Nursery is provided. RSVP for dinner here! Please RSVP by noon on Monday, September 21.
Children (K-5th) - Catechism. Led by Mary Cooper and volunteers.
Youth (6th-12th Grade) - Ten Commandments. Led by Pastor Chris and volunteers.
Adults - God’s Big Picture, Tracing the Storyline of the Bible. Led by Pastor John and Pastor Brian.
Women - Joshua by Jen Wilkin.
Men’s Oktoberfest Dinner - Men, high school-aged and up, join us this Sunday at 6 pm in the Family Life Center. Man's Call to Be Tough-Minded and Tender-Hearted. We’ll hear from Rick Stark, Associate Pastor at Decatur PCA, and enjoy a time of fellowship. All men, high school-aged and up, are welcome to join us; invite a friend!
