Newsletter October 17, 2025
Dear Church Family and Friends,
For several years now, Keith & Kristyn Getty, along with scores of other musicians, pastors, and theologians, have worked on a new hymnal project. This has culminated in the release of the Sing! Hymnal. It contains the best of traditional and modern hymnody, with songs spanning centuries of church history up to this past year. It is a wonderful gift to the Church!
Our session recently approved the use of the Sing! Hymnal at Cornerstone, and you will soon see it in the chairs alongside the Bibles on Sundays. We hope to begin using the hymnals at the end of October. The hymnal contains much of what we sing already, and will be a wonderful aid in our worship services as we praise God together. The hymnal not only includes songs, but also features Scripture readings, prayers, creeds, poems, and other quotes that accompany the hymns. There are also helpful indexes and a neat section of hymn stories. Cornerstone has always sung hymns, but this is the first time we have used hymnals.
For many of the students and kids who have grown up at Cornerstone, this will be a new experience. This also may be a new experience for those who have been in other churches that have used screens in their services rather than hymnals. There are also those who attended churches with an older hymnal, like the Trinity Hymnal or the Celebration Hymnal. One of the benefits of the Sing! Hymnal is that it not only contains the traditional hymns we know and love, but it also contains beloved modern hymns that have been written in our lifetime!
Here's a brief Q&A that may answer a few questions you have about the hymnal:
How many hymns are in the hymnal?
- They have numbered every hymn, reading, etc., and the hymnal ends with #900 (The Hallelujah Chorus!). There are actually a little under 500 hymns.
Is my favorite song in the hymnal?
- The answer is probably "yes!" You can go to the Sing! Hymnal Index and find out.
Are there songs that we sing that are not in the hymnal?
- Yes. There are a few songs or alternate hymn tunes that we sing regularly that are not in the hymnal. Occasionally, we also have arrangements of hymns that will differ from the hymnal arrangement. We will still sing these songs and note them in the bulletin when we do.
Will we still have a bulletin?
- Yes. Our bulletin contains the full order of worship for each Sunday. We will begin putting hymn numbers in where applicable, and will also have song lyrics available in the bulletin.
What color is the hymnal?
- The hymnal is a dark green color, cloth over board edition. We decided to have it a different color from the Bibles to help you find each of them in the chairs in front of you.
Will every individual have a hymnal?
- Hymnals are for sharing! There will be a hymnal available for every 2 people.
What if I have other questions about the hymnal?
- Ask Pastor Brian. You can also learn more at The Sing Hymnal Website
Looking forward to singing with you all on Sunday!
Pastor Brian
